Aesthetic breast surgery: when beauty meets prevention
Aesthetic surgery is often perceived as something tied solely to image and vanity. In reality, in clinical practice, it can become an extraordinary opportunity for prevention and even early diagnosis. This is confirmed by Barbara Cagli, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Plastic Surgeon, head plastic surgeon at the Breast Unit of the Campus Bio-Medico University of Rome and researcher at Link Campus University, who has often seen patients discover hidden problems precisely through a path initially undertaken for aesthetic purposes.
Prevention that begins with an aesthetic procedure

Every breast surgery requires meticulous preparation. It’s not just about aesthetic evaluations, but real diagnostic checks.
«Before operating on the breast, we always require a series of preoperative tests to make sure we’re working on healthy breast tissue. This means a mammogram or ultrasound depending on the patient’s age, and sometimes an MRI for those who already have breast implants», explains Cagli.
This mandatory step often becomes the first opportunity for women to undergo a breast check-up after years of neglect. «Even though we talk so much about prevention, I often meet patients who haven’t had breast exams in a very long time. The requirement to complete these tests before surgery becomes a great opportunity for early diagnosis».
Dr. Cagli’s experience provides concrete examples. «In some cases, preoperative exams have revealed a tiny lesion, allowing for complete recovery. In others, after a breast reduction, the histological examination of the mammary gland has shown microscopic lesions that would never have been detected through routine imaging tests».
That’s why aesthetic surgery, often dismissed as frivolous, can actually become an ally in women’s health.
The therapeutic value of aesthetic surgery
For Barbara Cagli, the concept is clear: aesthetic surgery cannot be reduced to a mere act of beautification. «For me, it’s a real mantra: the therapeutic value of aesthetic surgery. Procedures such as breast reduction or correction of malformations restore quality of life, confidence, and self-esteem. These are disabling conditions, not just aesthetic concerns, but issues of physical and psychological well-being».
Scientific research also seems to support this view, offering unexpected perspectives. «A recent study suggested that breast implants might even have a protective effect against breast cancer, possibly by stimulating the immune system. It’s a positive message worth sharing».
The power of early diagnosis
The numbers are clear: one in eight women will develop breast cancer during her lifetime. But if the disease is detected in its early stages, the chances of recovery are extremely high.
«Early diagnosis is everything, it means healing at the very moment of diagnosis. That’s why I always say: check yourselves, check yourselves, check yourselves».

Through Barbara Cagli’s words comes a powerful message: an invitation to look beyond the prejudice that sets beauty and health in opposition, two dimensions that, in reality, can and must coexist. «The WHO reminds us that health is physical and psychological well-being. We shouldn’t feel ashamed for wanting to improve an aspect of our body: aesthetic surgery helps us feel better about ourselves, strengthen self-confidence, and live more serene relationships». In this intertwining of beauty and health lies the true strength of aesthetic surgery: not only transforming appearance, but giving women the opportunity to care for themselves completely, inside and out.
